Which design patterns do you know?

Created: Nov. 15, 2019 Updated: Sept. 29, 2026

The interview was going smoothly until a question came up where I knew the answer, just not the words.

I'm between jobs at the moment, so I'm going to interviews. The last one was going really well, Python questions no problem, my career story too, until I was asked which design patterns I know. And my mind went blank.

The funny thing is that I program pretty well, and the code I write stays maintainable for years, so there must be some patterns in it. I just couldn't name them. A bit like a cook who's been making a great sauce for years and, asked about the technique, says: well… I stir.

I probably write facades and adapters, only in my head they're called “the class that hides the mess” and “the plug converter”.

I took it as a gap, so after the interview I read up and made myself notes for the future. I'm taking a dictionary to the next one :-)
